About Conceição das Crioulas Community

“Conceição das Crioulas is a quilombola community located in the municipality of Salgueiro, in the central hinterland of Pernambuco. It was founded in the middle of 1802 when six black women arrived and settled in the area. The group was made up of Mendencha Ferreira, Francisca Ferreira, Francisca Presidente, Francisca Macário, Germana Ferreira and Romana. The origin of these women who began our story is not known for sure, which has never been a major issue for the community, but it is known that they identified themselves as Creole. Some historians in the community say that they came from a place called Panela D'água, others say that they managed to escape when they disembarked at the port of Salvador, in Bahia. Therefore, they were not enslaved.

What is most present in the narratives oftheir descendants is that these women planted and spun cotton and sold it inthe city of Flores (PE). As a result, they managed to buy three leagues of land (the area of the quilombola territory of Conceição das Crioulas)”

3rd Meeting of the Quilombola Community of Conceição das Crioulas [Brasil]

2023

The meeting was born out of dialogue between the quilombo of Conceição das Crioulas, through the AQCC (quilombola association of Conceição das Crioulas) and the intercultural movement Identidades, from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (Portugal). The aim was to bring together quilombola communities, public and private basic and higher education institutions to better understand the problems faced by the quilombola movement, sharing the struggles, knowledge and flavours of Conceição das Crioulas. Abel, who as an artist has been part of the Identidades project since 2017, returns for the second time to Conceição das Crioulas, where he has developed various workshops with the community's schools while depicting the whole encounter in his drawing notebooks, through analog photography and his series of portraits.
